Every year, since they were little, I have handmade a new Christmas ornament for each of our three children. Many of the ornaments were crocheted, some were cross stitched on plastic canvas and others made of felt. This year, I was a little late in finishing their ornaments just as I’m a little late in posting holidays wishes here.
The pattern I chose to use this year came from a design posted on Gail Pan’s blog as a Christmas gift to her readers. I reduced the size of the pattern to make it the right size for an ornament.
Those three simple words, joy, hope and peace are my holiday wish for you, now and in the new year.

When I went out onto the front porch yesterday, I was surprized to see a package by the door. I thought the mail truck had passed us by, but obviously not. Then when I turned the box around to see who it was from I was thrilled. It was from Suzanne McMinn over at Chickens in the Road. She had gotten my name in the Secret Christmas Swap.
I opened it right away and this is what I found:
That’s the wreath she had posted instructions for on her blog!
And you know what the really fun thing was. Yesterday was my birthday, as well. Suzanne, of course, couldn’t have known that my birthday was coming up but the timing made her gift that much more special.
Thank you, Suzanne!

Earlier this fall, I signed up for a Secret Christmas Swap over on the forum for the Chickens in the Road blog.
Now that my secret partner has received her gift, I can share pictures of the gifts I made her.
First, is this crocheted garland.
Here’s a close up:
Then these crocheted ornaments to hang on her tree.
Finally a fabric gift bag for her to store them in once Christmas is over.
I really had a lot of fun working on the gifts. And it’s been great fun too, seeing all the other gifts as they are arriving at their destinations; each one so unique.

It’s been months since I posted an Independence Days update. And this would be a very long post if I tried to detail everything that we’ve accomplished in that time. Instead I’m going to tell you about how our sweet potato experiment turned out.
Back in June, when I bought home my four little sweet potatoes slips I wasn’t at all sure if we’d have any success growing them in containers. We did lose two of the plants for reasons unknown but the two survivors grew well. They didn’t flower much… not like regular potatoes. We knew that we had at least one sweet potato because we could see it peeking up out of the soil, so we left them in the containers as long as possible.
Then on the last Sunday in October, the weather service broadcast a frost warning. It was time to empty the containers and see what we had. One of the great things about growing sweet potatoes in containers is that to harvest, all you do is dump the container upside down onto a tarp like this:
That smaller container only had one fair size potato and a couple of small ones. We were, however, pleasantly surprized when we turned over the second, larger container and lifted it off.
And here they are all laid out to dry in the sun for a bit.
Not a huge harvest. Still there was more than enough for a side dish for Thanksgiving and some left for Christmas as well.
We are counting this experiment as a success and will definitely be planting sweet potatoes in containers again next year.
