I Won Some Fat Quarters and WIP Wednesday

Posted by supermom on September 14, 2011

I was going through all the pictures I took last week and realized that I had forgotten to post about the fun surprize in the form of a squishie that was waiting for me when I got home from Canada.

While I was away getting our youngest settled into his second year of college, I got an e-mail from Impera Magna over at The Adventures of the Empress of the Universe telling me that I was one of the winners of 4 Citron/Gray FQs from Michael Miller!

It was so much fun to arrive home after driving for two days and find this parcel waiting for me.

Thank you Freda!

In my comment on the giveaway post, I mentioned that I’d make a tote bag out of the fat quarters if I won, but since I’ve received them it’s been fun to imagine them transformed into all sorts of different things… so for now, I’m just enjoying them as is.

WIP Wednesday

My list of unfinished projects had one more item added to it last week.

I’ve got all the blocks on my Smiling Sunflower quilt sewn together, but after going through my stash, I couldn’t find anything that I had enough of to make the borders.

The fat quarter bundles I used for the quilt were quilt shop fabrics, so I want the borders to be made of the same quality fabric.  And that means waiting until the next time we make a trip that takes us close to a quilt shop.

Then there is this pile of quilts and table runner/toppers in need of quilting and binding.  The table runner/toppers are going to be used to practice some more FMQing on.

I’m also borrowing an idea from Sandra over at Sandra Sews : ).  She makes up project kits that include everything she needs to complete a particular project.

So I’m making up a couple of kits for projects to work on during this month’s Friday Night Sew In.  Have you signed up yet?

It’s not too late, just click on the button above and it will take you to Handmade by Heidi, then scroll down for the sign up post.

In addition to all the above, it’s time to get back at our Christmas gift list.  That got set aside for the summer while our son was home as I want this year’s Christmas gifts to be surprizes for everyone not just for the recipient.

Needless to say, I have a busy few months ahead of me for sure.

WIP Wednesday – New Lawn Chair Cushions

Posted by supermom on July 6, 2011

Another of the major projects that I wanted to get done this year was recovering the cushions for our lawn chairs.  We bought the set of 5 chairs in the fall of the year 2000 when we first moved to Maui to give us something to sit on (both out on the lanai and inside the house) while we waited for our furniture to arrive from Alberta, Canada.  They’ve been through two moves since, all sorts of weather conditions and were looking much the worse for wear.

This past weekend, I carefully unpicked the seams on one of the cushions so that I could use the pieces to make a pattern.  Once I had that done, it was time to start cutting and sewing.

So far, I’ve got one completed except for replacing the buttons on the back of the cushion and two more seats and backs waiting to be sewn together.

I’m reusing the batting (after giving it a wash) from all but one of the cushions as that one was in the worst condition of the lot.  Each cushion had four buttons, front and back so I’ll also be covering all those with new matching fabric before reinstalling them.

This is the first major project for which I’ve been using my Singer 15-91.  Which means, that yes, Dave has completed refinishing the Art Deco cabinet and you can look for a photo laden post later this week.

I couldn’t be more pleased with the way the 15-91 sews.   While my modern Singer would have been able to handle sewing the cushions covers, there’s no way I would have even attempted to then sew those cushions together using it.   However, the 15-91 handled the four layers of upholstery fabric without any hesitation.  Due to the bulk of the cushions it was awkward getting them in position to sew and that did become a two person job.   Dave held the cushions in position while I guided the ends through the sewing machine.

I’m hoping to have this project finished by the end of this week.  Now that I’ve seen how beautifully the 15-91 handles this kind of project, I can’t wait to try her out on the other projects I’ve got on my 2011 list.

WIP Wednesday and FNSI Reminder

Posted by supermom on May 18, 2011

Today I’m working on sewing the quilt back for this scrappy nine patch quilt top:

A larger photo of the quilt top can be seen here.

I’m using a thrifted white cotton sheet for the back but it wasn’t quite long enough so I added a row of blocks made from the leftovers fabrics from the front.

When I was pressing the sheet to get it ready to use, I noticed one small area of discolouration and a couple of little stains that look like marker stains so decided to conceal them with some appliquéd hearts.

I’ve got one heart done, two more basted and ready to appliqué.   The back is going to need another good pressing once I get them sewn down.

And now I’m actually glad there were those little flaws that needed to be creatively covered up, because I really like what those three simple hearts are adding to the back.

Once I’m finished with this quilt back, I’ve got one more to make for my Disappearing Nine Patch quilt  top and then it’s on to cutting batting to fit.    Then  I’ll have 5 quilts ready to be hand-basted.  Almost perfect timing for FNSI  this Friday, May 20.   Though I may also spend that evening getting acquainted with the vintage Singer 15-91 that I won on an ebay auction on Mother’s Day.

If you haven’t done so already, you can still sign up for this month’s Friday Night Sew In over at Handmade by Heidi.  Just click on the FNSI button below.

WIP Wednesday – Baby Quilt

Posted by supermom on April 6, 2011

Now that one of the larger secret Christmas projects is finished, I’ve decided to pull out an old WIP.  I made this baby quilt top a little over three years ago.

Three years is a long time to wait to be quilted.

Here you can see that I fussy cut all the squares for with teddy bears.

I actually made two of these; one with teddies on a yellow background and this one on the green because I wasn’t sure which I wanted to send to Dave’s granddaughter when she was born.  I ended up sending the yellow (on her second birthday).  That one was so easy to quilt once I got a walking foot for my machine.  If only I’d gotten the walking foot sooner, she’d have had her quilt sooner.   Thank goodness I made them large enough that they’ll work on a toddler bed too.

This one has been in the drawer waiting to be finished.

Yesterday, I pulled it out and then started cutting the pieces for the backing and sewing them together.

Now I just need to cut the batting to size.  I’m using flannel drapery lining for the batting so that the quilt isn’t too heavy.

Once I get that done, I can start basting.  I’m going to use this quilt to practice Sharon Schamber’s hand basting method.   I pinned the yellow one when I quilted it, but found that I didn’t like having all those pins everywhere.  I’m hoping I like this method better.   Sharon has a couple of videos demonstrating how she hand bastes.
